TestsPLANThis test is prepared by the ACT company and is a short form of the ACT. It has a needs assessment, and statement of educational goals. It also has an interest inventory to identify career paths. The test consists of tests in English, Math, Science reasoning, and Reading. The results will compare the student with sophomores nationally. It will also give students a projected ACT score range. PSATThe Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test is a short form of the SAT test. It is an optional test normally taken by juniors during the month of October. This test is used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to determine National Merit Semifinalists. It consists of three testing categories: Verbal, Math, and Writing. Students use this as another practice test before they start taking college entrance tests for real in the spring of their junior year. Results normally come back around the Thanksgiving holiday. Sign up for the PSAT is now closed. The cost is $13.00 and may be paid in the counseling office. The test will be given at the High school Auxiliary Gym on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 7:40 am. Please bring 2 #2 pencils and a calculator and a watch to pace yourself. ACT/SATCollege entrance testing normally begins during the spring of the junior year for college bound students. Counselors will go into classes and pass out information on registration procedures for these tests during the month of February. ACT recommends juniors may start with the April test. Years ago the state of Michigan decided to base their Michigan Competitive Scholarship on the results of the ACT test. Students standard scores in English, Math, Science reasoning, and Reading must add up to 90 to qualify. Then students must show financial need and go to college in the state of Michigan in order to receive the scholarship. Since the state uses ACT, all of the Michigan colleges also use ACT so that the students applying to a Michigan college will only need to take one type of college entrance test. Most students going to an out-of-state college may still get by with an ACT, but they should check a college handbook to make sure. The ACT web site has listed 9 colleges where SAT is the exclusive college test. Last year, 201 seniors took the ACT, and 7 seniors took the SAT. In the last 5 years, anywhere from 5-15 seniors have taken the SAT and 158-201 have taken the ACT.
