Eligibility:
- Generally speaking, students residing in any of the school districts participating in the MAISD’s 2008-2009 Countywide Schools of Choice Plan are eligible to apply for enrollment. Students currently under expulsion, and those with a history of expulsion, suspension and/or truancy are not eligible to apply for enrollment.
- Students from Local Districts in contiguous ISD’s are eligible to apply for Schools of Choice under the Mona Shores Schools of Choice Plan.
Application Process:
Schools of Choice application materials may be obtained beginning Monday, April 14, 2008, at the Community Services Office located within the Mona Shores Administration Building, 3374 McCracken (corner of Norton and McCracken). Applications must be fully completed and returned in person to the Community Services Office by 4:00 p.m., Monday, May12, 2008. If necessary, a public drawing will be held at the May 12, 2008, Board of Education meeting to determine new enrollees. Board meetings begin at 7:00 p.m., with the May 12th meeting being held at the Mona Shores Administration Building. Draws will be held by grade level, and only if the district receives more student applications than there are slots (grade level) available. Siblings of current choice students will be given preference for identified openings. Parents and guardians will be notified of these results in early June. Once selected, students who fail to enroll by the first day of school, and those who do not attend all year, must reapply for admission.
Elementary School (K-5) Enrollment:
- Mona Shores Schools retains the right to assign students to particular elementary schools and programs (i.e. Multiage / Traditional Classrooms). The district will attempt to place siblings together in the same building, however, this is sometimes not possible. The district will also attempt to honor requested building placements, but this too is sometimes not possible.
Placement Testing:
- Grade or course level assessments may be administered to determine appropriate student placement. Students scoring below established district standards may be expected to participate in extended day or extended year academic enrichment activities. Parents and guardians are also expected to fulfill a partnership role in their child’s education.
Duration of Enrollment:
Schools of Choice students enrolling in Mona Shores Public Schools are eligible to remain in the district until graduation.
Transportation: - Transportation is not included in the 2008-2009 Mona Shores Schools of Choice Plan.
Timelines:
- Applications may be picked up beginning Monday, April 14, 2008, and must be returned in person by 4:00 p.m., Monday, May 12, 2008.
